The Washington Monument was built in honor of George Washington, our first president and the man who led America in her quest for independence. It stands 555 feet, 5-1/8 inches tall, offers more than 30 miles of views and is encircled by 50 American flags. It is located at the west end of the National Mall and is reflected in the Reflecting Pool. Construction took 36 years, 5 months and 2 days from the day the cornerstone was laid, July 4, 1848, until the capstone was set on December 6, 1884. President Chester A. Arthur dedicated the monument on February 21, 1885, one day short of Washington’s 153rd birthday.
